Live Sun puts the real Sun on your wrist. Every hour the watch face loads the newest image taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the spacecraft that watches the Sun around the clock. What you see is not an illustration: it is the Sun as it looked within the last hour, with its glowing magnetic loops, active regions, sunspots and dark coronal holes.

The Sun changes all the time. As it rotates, active regions travel across the disk and disappear around the edge after about two weeks; loops brighten and fade, and during a solar flare a region can flash up within minutes. Check your watch in the morning and again in the evening, and over a week you will watch the Sun turn.

6 ways to see the Sun. SDO looks at the Sun through different filters, each showing a different layer and temperature. Pick yours in the settings: Gold (AIA 171): magnetic loops in the corona, about 600,000 °C Red (AIA 304): the fiery layer just above the surface, about 50,000 °C Green (AIA 94): very hot plasma over flare regions, about 6 million °C Teal (AIA 131): the hottest plasma in solar flares, about 10 million °C Bronze (AIA 193): the corona with dark coronal holes, about 1.2 million °C Orange (HMI): the Sun as your eyes would see it, with sunspots

Touch and hold the watch face to see what you are looking at: the name of the view, what it shows, how hot that layer is and when the image was taken. The info screen is available in 11 languages (English, Magyar, Deutsch, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Polski, Português, Norsk, Svenska) and shows the temperature in °C or °F, following your watch setting or your own choice.

The image is downloaded in the background about once an hour, so it uses very little battery and data. Until the first image arrives, the watch face shows a built-in image of the selected view.
